Reg's Collection
These are the most recent pics of my Elton collection, but these were taken in early 2003, so they are a bit out of date.  If you have any questions about anything I have just email me at reghead121@sbcglobal.net.
....see even the cat is checking out my collection!! :)
On April 16th, on a whim, I decided to write Elton.  I wrote him to tell him about the almost two years that have gone by now since my well-known substance battle.  A battle I fought after seeing an old interview with Sir David Frost where he told people watching who were going through the same thing  to ask for help, that it wasn't as hard people think, and that the most important thing you can do in life is to swallow your pride and just ask. The letter was very candid, without any thought of what I'd write before hand......and very long LOL.
As an after thought, right before sealing the envelope, I decided to be brave enough to see if he would sign something.  I grabbed my box cover from the Made In England cassette from '95 and threw it in the envelope.  I took a big risk of A. it getting damaged and B. never seeing it again......but in reality that thought came after the mailman had already gotten it.
I would like to say that I forgot to send a SASE with, but I didn't.  I did it on purpose.  If I was lucky enough to get something back, I wanted to make him write out the envelope to check out his very hard to read handwriting. LOL!!
I don't advise doing that though - I was damn lucky he dug for an envelope...Maybe he liked what I wrote.....who knows....
I also wanted my letter to stick out.  Since I know he loves flowers I whipped out these flower stickers I have.  They aren't any ordinary stickers either....they are REAL flowers, pressed to dry, then lamenated into tiny stickers.  They run about $4 for a small pack of 10......I used a whole pack of them.  I was afraid of it being really gaudy....which it was, but also attention grabbing.
And just because it's me......I made a smartass comment on the back saying: "What's the key to getting someone's attention? Use ----->
Flowers!
Timing can also be the difference between getting something back, and never getting a return.  I studied the tour schedule, and knowing he'd be in Atlanta all week between shows, he'd probably be bored....and going thru his mail.  Seems to have been the case.
Now fast forward to April 28......
I was sitting at my computer, playing around with this website, when the mail dude came into my building.  I know when he comes........because the livingroom wall where the puter is, is on the other side of the hallway where the mailboxes are.  Normally damned annoying because when he opens it up to put everyone's mail in it sounds like he's banging on a car engine in a garage.......
On this day though, I heard what sounded like him trying to shove something in one of the mailboxes.  I chuckled and thought, someone's gonna be pissed to find their mail crushed up.  Then he left and I got up to go check my mail.  I usually don't check it on time, but you know, some tiny flicker of hope my cover would come back to me, was making me hightail it to the mailbox every morning.
I grabbed my keys, unlocked the door, pulled it open......and a large fat manilla envelope fell into my apartment.  My first thought was, oh cool, a package from my mom.
I picked it up and turned it over to see the writing on it.
Now two things hit me at once.......1. No return address 2. It was NOT my mother's handwriting.  She's a lefty and her writing always slants.  Then my stomach did this little wierd lurch and I thought......could it be?  As I was convincing myself there's no way I'd be that lucky, I looked at the postmark and just about fell over in surprise.....Atlanta P & DC - USPS 30304 was stamped on the two American Flag Stamps in the upper right corner.
All I managed was a small high pitched squeal as I slammed the door shut and went about trying to open it without ruining Elton's handwriting on the envelope.
The thing that hit me as I was opening it made me laugh. Here I sent this thing off in a regular cheap envelope......and he sent it back in this huge monstrosity of a manilla envelope with like two layers of bubble wrap inside.  Made me feel like an unprepared fool I tell you...I can only image his thoughts when he saw I shoved that thing in there unprotected like I did.
Actually - it made me feel like a kid and he was the parent doing it the right way LOL!
I was thrilled.  I recieved not only my cover back but also a picture like others I've seen recieve. Interesting that on one of the autographs he seems to have pressed his thumbprint into the "E". Too cool man!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH ELTON!
I finally have my first two autographs :)
